Leonard is a political scientist with extensive local and international service in development work, advocacy and campaigns, for health, democracy and accountability. While at Uganda’s Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development and Oxfam International, Leonard led the Uganda Participatory Poverty Assessment Process through which the Poverty Eradication Action Plan, the Poverty Action Fund, the Plan for Modernising Agriculture, the National Agricultural Advisory Services and the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund.
Leonard later joined Actionaid International as the International Head for HIV/AIDS Programmes, where he actively led the universal access to treatment campaigns. Leonard returned to Uganda where he briefly served as the Country Director at the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. He has since set up The Uhuru Institute for Social Development a social business using business acumen to promote citizens collective action for social and economic empowerment, defense of human rights and nurturing democratic practice.
Jane is a Co-founder and Operations Director at the Uhuru Institute for Social Development. She brings on board:
- Over 13 years’ entrepreneurial experience from running businesses in finance, tourism, travel and logistics.
- Over 9 years’ mentorship and coaching knowledge and expertise, in entrepreneurship, organizational development, cooperative business practice, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, insurance and wealth management.
- Over 10 years’ in Financial and wealth advisory with experience and vast knowledge in complex investment products and financing solutions having worked closely with Uganda’s capital Markets Authority as well as local and international finance companies like Sanlam, Goldman Sachs, Standard Group, Generali Group, Royal London 360 and Old Mutual amongst others. Working with international companies has reinforced her understanding of the geo-economic and political aspects that shape the global agenda.
- Over 8 years in undertaking Social Work, Policy and Research assignments and coordinating economic and social development programs at local and regional levels.
Jane holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (finance) from Uganda Martyrs’ University (Nkozi); A bachelor of Social Works and Social Administration from Makerere University Kampala; International certificates in Securities & Investments and Wealth Management from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments, UK and certificates in Insurance practice from the Insurance Institute of Uganda.
Denis is responsible for heading the TUI Business Development activities as well as managing business relations. He aspires to enhance the capacity of societies in sustainable development through practical business solutions that lead to effective mobilization of people and resources. With over one and a half decades working experience in the Banking sector, Cooperatives, Micro Deposit Taking Institutions, Government Ministries, Private Sector Foundation Uganda, United Nations Development program and International Social Networks. With such strong technical and Management experience, now he endeavors to propagate his expertise to help professionals and young people understand the complexity of today’s development which is driven by global Geo-politics which requires multi-disciplinary and team–work efforts as well as practical business and management solutions.
Denis has held senior and top management positions in multiple organizations, including being a Technical Advisor –BDS at Uhuru Institute for Social Development, Team leader/ Visiting Consultant at Public College, Ministry of Public service of the republic of Uganda on retirement planning and Business strategy, Team leader at United Nations SACCO Uganda, Head of Credit Supervision at UGAFODE Ltd (MDI), Regional Supervisor at PRIDE Micro Finance Ltd (MDI) , Sales Executive at Standard Chartered Bank and Corporate Sales Manager at Bayport Financial Services U ltd.
Denis is at the helm of supporting organizations grow in the area of Corporate governance as he is currently serving as a Member Board of Directors for Ryakasinga Center for Higher Education, Co –Founder Sheema Center for disabled Children, Chairman Kabatereine Foundation and Board member for NAFASI Multipurpose Cooperative Society
Denis is a Ph.D. (Cdt.) Environmental Management (Renewable Energy Financing) 2017-2019, Holds Master of Law Oil and Gas Management (Energy and Policy), 2016, Executive Master of Business Administration (SME Mgt) 2014, Bachelor of Business Administration (Banking and Finance), 2005 and a Diploma Quantitative Economics, 2000.
Lawrence is a statistician with over 10 years in print and digital sales. Before joining Uhuru Institute for Social Development, he worked with East African Business Week, Fountain Publishers and Nation Media Group Limited (Uganda).
He joins Uhuru Institute as a Business Development Officer (Sales), he has experience in developing and implementing strategic sales plans and forecasts to achieve set sales targets for our products and services, coordinating the allocation and execution of leads, recommending strategies which allows the business to stay competitive and continue to grow and maintaining a strong customer service, customer retention and relationship management culture for the benefit of the organization
Francis has a wealth of experiences in community organizing and financial inclusion, leading high performance teams and developing programs that deliver efficiency. Prior to joining TUI, Francis was a Manager at Mukono Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative. Francis’ previous roles largely involved him delivering new and innovative solutions to challenges. With his Focus on developing programs that deliver efficiencies and playing a leading role in the mobilization and implementation of operational processes, Francis is enthusiastic about defining organizational direction, achieving goals and optimizing businesses
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
Prior to joining TUI, Miriam trained with the Civil Aviation Authority as an Accounts Assistant which ignited her passion for Accounting and Finance. Miriam is highly efficient and very skilled in Cash management, Accounting principles and practices, events planning, management and coordination and logistics planning and management.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce with specialty in accounting.
Maxine is a dedicated Communications professional with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass communication from Uganda Christian university and is currently pursuing her Master’s degrees. Before joining TUI, she worked with SOS Children’s Villages and Electoral Commission.
She is passionate about human rights, advocacy, youth empowerment and communications and she hopes to increase TUI’s visibility to its target audience.
Bekar is a Computer Enthusiast, Passionate About Technology, Tech Researcher and Blogger. He has an unending enthusiasm for Technology, eager to learn new technologies and has thirst for sharing.
He Joins Uhuru Institute and the cooperative movement with a vision to provide online visibility to all cooperatives around the country.
Petronilla is very passionate about helping others and efficient when it comes to coordination of events and customer care. Prior to joining TUI she worked as a processing specialist with Americana food company, Qatar, Doha for a year and a half and also worked as a nursery seedling supervisor volunteer at National Forestry Authority.
She holds a Cisco certified network associate routing and switching certification at Makerere University .
Jonathan is our Field Support Assistant which means he is well versed with whatever we are doing in the field. He is a very optimistic person with a very keen interest in welfare, he is in charge of coordinating all events within the organization and the field.
